Getting a pet for your family can teach them responsibility and care. There are many great choices of animals that make great pets, but it is important to know what animals do not make good pets. Listed below are 5 animals that do not make great pets.
1. Chimps – Contrary to the movies and TV shows, chimps do not make good pets. They are not like humans. Chimps need constant attention, create constant messes, have a demanding feeding schedule, and need constant mental stimulation. Since chimps can live 50+ years in captivity, the time investment is great.
2. Squirrels – Squirrels have been known to live in captivity, but this is an unnatural environment for them. They like to run and climb and do not enjoy being in a cage. They have sharp claws and teeth that can hurt you and your family.
3. Scorpions – These animals do not require a lot of care. However, you cannot handle them without the risk of being stung or damaging the spider.
4. Snapping Turtles – You must be able to provide a snapping turtle with a large tank of water in order to accommodate their very large size. Some can get up to 60 pounds! They also tend to be aggressive, so having them around children is not a good idea.
5. Raccoons – Raccoons are sold as domestic pets; however, they are still very wild. They are very destructive and get into cabinets, food, and knickknacks. Pets should be animals that adapt to human companionship. If an animal doesn’t fit that description, then they should definitely not be brought into your house as a family pet.
